11:11 am on 9 July 2012

Police in Bay of Plenty say the assault and robbery of two French hitchhikers on Saturday afternoon is a timely reminder for anyone acccepting a lift from strangers.

The two were hitch hiking from Mount Maunganui to Rotorua when they were picked up by two men and driven to the rear of an abandoned service station on State Highway Two.

There they were attacked and robbed of their money, passports, clothing and other possessions.

Detective sergeant Darryl Brazier says police will on Monday try to confirm the car involved in the attack.

He says they are particularly interested in a black Nissan Pulsar with the registration number ZR 9879.
