iPod listener hit by train

12:52 pm on 9 July 2012

Police believe a man who was hit by a train in Auckland on Monday morning may have been listening to his iPod as he crossed the tracks.

The man was hit just before 9am at the intersection of Porters Avenue and New North Road in the suburb of Mount Eden, which is barrier controlled.

He was taken to Auckland hospital, where he is in a critical condition.

Senior Sergeant Junior Abraham says it appears the man waited behind the barriers as a freight train went past, then walked across thinking it was clear.

But a passenger train came past and the man was hit despite the driver sounding warning bells and hitting the brakes.

Trains were disrupted for a couple of hours while police examined the scene.
