Two men charged in connection with the theft of 96 war medals from the Waiouru Army Museum have been remanded in custody.

The medals, which include nine Victoria Crosses and two George Crosses, were stolen on 2 December last year.

In February, police recovered the 12 sets of medals after payment of a $300,000 reward.

They were officially returned to the museum on Tuesday.

The two men, aged 37 and 39, are charged with burglary. Their names and any identifying features are suppressed.

They will re-appear in Auckland District Court on Friday.
