More police resources needed if targets to be met - criminologist

A criminologist says the Government's new public service performance crime targets will be difficult to achieve without additional police resources.

The Government on Monday announced a set of targets for the public sector to achieve over the next five years.

They include reducing the crime rate by 15% and violent crime by 20%.

Prime Minister John Key conceded some of the targets will be extremely difficult to achieve but acknowledged the Government will be held to account on whether they are.

Victoria University professor of criminology John Pratt says police simply don't have the resources to achieve the targets.

Police Minister Anne Tolley says police funding was maintained in the Budget in May and she has absolute confidence they will deliver on the targets.
