Wild weather hits

MetsService is warning of overnight snow showers in areas of the South Island.

It says there will be snow showers at Arthurs Pass, Lewis Pass and Lindis Pass from 4am Sunday morning.

A front is currently moving east over the the top of the South Island and it will pass over the North Island Sunday morning.

Rain is easing about Buller and Nelson and an earlier severe weather warning has been lifted.

The metservice says strong winds are likely to ease Saturday night.

Elsewhere, Dunedin's midwinter carnival had to be postponed until Sunday night because of heavy rain.
