Faberge box found in Auckland

A century-old jewel-encrusted Faberge box has been found at an Auckland auction house - much to its owner's surprise.

Items from the imperial Russian House of Faberge are among the most collectable in the world and the box is attracting international attention.

Webb's auction house says the box stood out for its exquisite detail, but was not identified as a piece of Faberge until it was inspected with a microscope.

Jewellery specialist Chris Devereux says his heart skipped a beat when he discovered the Faberge signature on the box.

He believes the box could fetch more than $20,000 at auction next week.
