A South Island rugby team has beaten the North Island in the first such fixture for 17 years.

The North-South match, held at the covered Forsyth Barr stadium in Dunedin, was planned as a fundraiser as part of the package to rescue the Otago Rugby Football Union from liquidation in March.

The southern team made up of players from the Crusaders and Highlanders super rugby franchises, beat the North 32 to 24.

The official attendance was 7427.

The New Zealand Rugby Union says it will not know how much money has been raised for the Dunedin City Council and other creditors for a few days.
