Near record numbers of skiers and snowboarders have opened the 2012 ski season at the Mt Hutt skifield in Canterbury.
This week's snow storm left a 65cm deep base across the skifield.
The first of 1400 enthusiasts arrived just before 5am on Saturday to welcome the season.
Operations manager James Urquhart estimates 80% of skiers came from Christchurch.
