Extreme care needed on alpine routes

6:48 am on 9 June 2012

Snow continues to make conditions difficult on some South Island roads.

The Transport Agency says crews and heavy machinery are working to clear snow and ice on the Lewis Pass route from the Hanmer turnoff to Springs Junction on State Highway Seven.

Extreme care is required on alpine routes.

Chains are necessary on SH94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound, and on SH73 from Springfield to Arthurs Pass. Both Porters Pass and Arthurs Pass are closed to towing vehicles.
