Police have identified skeletal remains found at an Auckland property last year as a man murdered three years ago.

A man was arrested for interfering with human remains earlier this week.

The incomplete skeleton were found in a derelict house in the suburb of Mt Wellington.

Police say the remains have been identified as Javed Fraser Mills, 25, formerly known as Javed Abdula Rahman.

They say Mr Mills lived at a nearby property where a forensic examination is taking place.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevin Hooper says more serious charges related to his death are likely to be laid in coming weeks.

Mr Hopper says the man was not reported missing by his family, but says there is evidence that the family was deceived into thinking that he was still alive.
