Police in Hamilton are searching for any occupants of a car which plunged from a bridge into the Waikato River.
The vehicle was travelling east on the Pukete Bridge in St Andrews when it went into the river about 8.20pm on Wednesday and sank.
Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend says police are looking for the car and anyone who may have been in it.
A police boat is being used to scour the river and the police dive squad has been called from Wellington.
The Pukete Bridge is closed to all traffic on Wednesday and motorists are being asked to use alternative routes.
