Christchurch preparing for possible flooding

4:13 pm on 4 June 2012

The Christchurch City Council says it is taking precautions against the threat of flooding in some low-lying areas, with high tides and heavy rain forecast in the next few days.

MetService is predicting heavy rain in Canterbury on Tuesday evening and Wednesday, and a council spokesperson says this coincides with high tides.

Work has been carried out to build up river banks in eastern Christchurch and contractors will be on stand-by in case of flooding.

The lower reaches of the Avon River in eastern Christchurch, where earthquake damage has raised the water level in some areas, are expected to be the worst affected.
