Painters find $60,000 in coins on roadside

Two Christchurch painters had a lucky find on Thursday, stumbling across about $60,000 in coins lying in bags on the side of the road.

Police say it appears a pallet of coins fell off a freight truck from Invercargill which was heading to security firm ACM Services.

A broken shackle, likely to have come from the truck, was found on the road near the spill.

Jaime Stephens told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme they spotted the money as they were driving along Rossall Street in the suburb of Merivale about 10am.

"After jumping up and down and squealing a little bit and smiling a lot, we got straight on to the phone to the cops. They turned up within about three minutes and they were very, very grateful."

Ms Stephens says they are unsure whether they will get a reward.
