Warning many children not getting quality early education

A Government advisory group is warning that many early childhood services are at risk of poor performance and some persistently do badly.

The group has made recommendations to the Government and its full report has been obtained by Radio New Zealand News under the Official Information Act.

The report says at any one time, only a small number of services are definitely identified as poorly performing, but a relatively large number are at high risk of suddenly deteriorating.

It says children from Maori, Pacific and poor families are most likely to be affected by poorer quality services.

The group has recommended quicker intervention in services that are failing, and higher minimum standards.
