Victoria University Television studies lecturer Trisha Dunlevy said nearly 1.5 million viewers had tuned-in in the past month, giving it similar numbers to Maori Television.
She said the sorts of programmes that TVNZ7 screens are unlikely to be seen again if taken off air.
