A television studies lecturer says the Government is making a big mistake by scrapping TVNZ7 when it is just beginning to hit its straps.

The commercial-free channel is due to go off air in just over a month.

More than 100 people attended a meeting in Christchurch on Monday night organised by the Save TVNZ7 campaign.

Victoria University Television studies lecturer Trisha Dunlevy said nearly 1.5 million viewers had tuned-in in the past month, giving it similar numbers to Maori Television.

She said the sorts of programmes that TVNZ7 screens are unlikely to be seen again if taken off air.
