Arrests likely following South Auckland brawl

7:31 am on 2 October 2008

Police say they expect to make arrests on Wednesday following a brawl outside a South Auckland liquor store that put four people in hospital.

The fight on Franich Street in Otara began about 5.30pm on Tuesday when a boy was followed into the shop by other young people.

The shop-owner confronted the teenagers as he thought one of them was shoplifting. A fight involving a hockey stick, fence paling and a knife then ensued.

The man was stabbed in the leg and his wife, nephew and a woman who was working in the dairy next door were also hurt.

One of the teens received head injuries but has since been discharged from hospital.

Dectective Senior Sergeant Dave Pizzini told Checkpoint it is a serious concern that people as young as 16 are walking the streets heavily intoxicated with knives.
