One of the most widely spoken languages in New Zealand is in the spotlight this week.
Samoan Language Week is being celebrated in homes, schools and workplaces in the run-up to the 50th anniversary of Samoa's independence on Friday.
Among the activities are an exhibition and concerts at the Museum New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, readings at public libraries in the main cities, and seminars and debates at universities in Auckland and Wellington.
The Human Rights Commission's principal race relations advisor, Sam Sefuiva, says the main aim is to encourage fluent speakers and beginners alike to speak Samoan every day.
Samoan Language Week started in New Zealand, but Mr Sefuiva says it is now celebrated by Samoan communities around the world.
