After two days in intensive care, the newborn son of a Waikato woman who died soon after giving birth has also died.

Casey Nathan, 20, was taken from a Huntly birthing unit to Waikato Hospital on Monday after a difficult birth and died soon afterwards.

Her son was placed in intensive care but died on Wednesday evening.

Birthcare Huntly general manager Anne Hanson, says she and her staff are shocked by what's happened, but she can't give any details ahead of the coroner's inquiry.

Midwifery Council chief executive Sharron Cole says people have a right to be shocked when deaths happen during childbirth because they are extremely rare.

A post-mortem will be carried out in Wellington on the baby.

Ms Nathan's body has been taken to Auckland for a post-mortem.

Police say they will wait for those results before deciding on any further action.
