Challenge over immigration changes launched

2:23 pm on 18 May 2012

An application for an injunction against changes to the parent category of the family immigration policy will be heard in the High Court in Auckland next month.

On 10 May, the Government said the process enabling the parents of citizens or residents to immigrate to New Zealand would close five days later and a new system would be introduced in July.

Immigration lawyer Frank Deliu has filed High Court proceedings on behalf of the Supreme Sikh Council.

Mr Deliu says only three working days notice of the changes was given, there was no consultation and hundreds of people have been caught out by the change

He wants the status quo to continue until the new policy comes into place.

Immigration Minister Nathan Guy says the changes were made public in March.
