Earthquakes continued to rattle Kaikoura on Thursday, with two centred off the the east coast of the South Island.
The first, a magnitude 5 quake, was situated 20km off the Kaikoura coast at a depth of 50km.
The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences says the quake struck at 10.40am and was felt from Canterbury to Wellington.
A second quake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale was felt just before 4pm. It was centred 20km east of Kaikoura at a depth of 20km.
About 3pm on Wednesday, a 3.6 magnitude quake was recorded 50km northeast of Kaikoura at a depth of 20km.
