Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia is pushing to ban smoking in cars and has been lobbying the Government to consider the idea.
The Associate Minister of Health says she often sees children who are effectively trapped in cars where their parents are smoking.
The Maori, Mana and Green parties back the idea.
The head of a Maori anti-smoking group agrees, saying it would be a great measure to improve the health of New Zealand's children.
"They have no say and very little rights in terms of sitting in what is a toxic soup," Te Ao Hurihuri director Shane Bradbrook says.
Prime Minister John Key said he isn't ruling out another rise in the excise on cigarettes and tobacco, but has not commented on smoking in cars.
