Tamihere flight decision 'incredibly stupid'

The Parole Board says it was incredibly stupid of convicted double-murderer David Tamihere to agree to fly over the scene of his crimes for a television documentary.

Tamihere was released from prison in late 2010 after serving a life sentence for killing Swedish backpackers Heidi Paakkonen and Urban Hoglin in Coromandel in 1989.

Tamihere was flown over the area for the documentary, which aired in March, in breach of parole conditions which prohibit him from entering the Coromandel Peninsula.

In a decision released on Tuesday the board said Tamihere has turned out to be his own worst adviser and made a serious mistake of judgement in taking the flight.

But the board says he doesn't pose any greater risk to public safety and will not be recalled to prison.
