Re-trial decision in raids case delayed

11:42 am on 16 April 2012

A decision on whether to seek a re-trial for the four defendants in Te Urewera raids trial has been put off until next month.

Tame Iti, Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara, Urs Signer and Emily Bailey were last month found guilty on a number of firearms and restricted weapon charges.

However the jury was unable to decide on the lead charge, that of participation in an organised criminal group.

The Crown was due to decide by Wednesday whether a re-trial will be sought.

But Crown prosecutor Ross Burns has successfully applied to the High Court in Auckland to push back the date.

Mr Burns says the extension was required because of lawyers' availability.

The new date for a decision to be made is 9 May.
