Group releases post-abortion complication figures

The anti-abortion group Right to Life has released figures for the number of women admitted to hospital with complications following abortions.

It says the data, obtained under the Official Information Act from the Ministry of Health, shows 877 women needed further hospital care after the procedure between 2009 and 2011.

More than 52,200 abortions were reported to the Abortion Supervisory Committee in the same period.

Right to Life says the number of bed days in hospital totalled more than 1000 during this period.

Spokesperson Ken Orr says the figures are very concerning. He says the Abortion Supervisory Committee does not include these statistics in its annual report to Parliament.
