Violent night in South Auckland

The police northern communications centre fielded more than 1100 calls from 10pm on Saturday - 7am Sunday.

There were two shootings - one fatal - during this period. Another man is a critical condition in hospital after being beaten.

A man, 26, was shot in a house in Papatoetoe at around 12.20am on Sunday.

Police say was walking to his front door when he was shot three times.

He was taken to Middlemore Hospital, but died several hours afterwards.

In the other incidents: a teenager, 15, was shot in the leg in Mangere at 9.30pm on Saturday.

Another man, 19, from Papakura is in Middlemore Hospital with head injuries after being found on a netball court. Police have been told of a fight in the area around 2am on Sunday. His condition is described as critical.

Detective Inspector John Timms says they were not random attacks as the offenders knew their victims.
