Civil Defence says a second large slip has come down on State Highway 2 at Tutira, so the road between Napier and Wairoa will stay closed for longer than expected.
The first slip came down on Wednesday night, but collapsed again after being cleared.
MetService has lifted heavy rain warnings for both Hawke's Bay and Gisborne, but says there could be intense bursts of 30mm - 40mm in isolated areas.
About 90mm of rain fell in the Gisborne ranges overnight.
CD controller Jon Davies told Morning Report no one was evacuated overnight, but they are still on alert.
