The Maori Council says the Waitangi Tribunal will urgently hear its claim on freshwater rights.
The claim was filed in February, with the support of 11 hapu groups.
The council is asking the Tribunal to uphold the rights of tangata whenua (people of the land) over freshwater resources.
The claim alleges that the Crown stripped Maori of their ownership of freshwater and geothermal resources without consent or compensation.
Dates for the hearing are yet to be confirmed by the Waitangi Tribunal.
