Two-hour fight to quell fish-and-chip shop fire

3:30 pm on 20 March 2012

Firefighters have put out a fire at a fish-and-chip shop in Akaroa that at one point threatened nearby buildings.

The Fire Service says emergency services were alerted to the fire at the Beach St shop at about 5.30am on Tuesday.

People had to be evacuated from neighbouring buildings and the service says it took six fire engines and three tankers about two hours to get the fire under control.

It says about 15% of a neighbouring restaurant was damaged.

It is not yet known whether the fire is suspicious.
