Mechanical fault affects Nelson flight

12:23 pm on 11 March 2012

Air New Zealand says a mechanical fault caused a flight bound for Nelson on Saturday to return to Auckland.

The flight left Auckland with 45 passengers just before 8pm, but turned back just after take-off when a door on the landing gear failed to close properly.

Fire crews were alerted and placed on standby.

However, Air New Zealand spokesperson Mark Street says there was no emergency landing and it is normal procedure for flights to return when a mechanical fault is found.

Passengers were put on another plane, which left an hour later.
