Police will take a lighter approach when they deal with driving offences in Auckland from this weekend.
Police Commissioner Peter Marshall has announced a five month trial in which officers will give warnings to drivers for low level breaches instead of issuing tickets.
Mr Marshall says every warning will save a police officer an hour of their time.
He says it will also provide a suitable way to deal with any infringements when the new give way rule comes into effect later this month.
Mr Marshall says a trial conducted in Wellington had inconclusive results, and the new trial will show whether the initiative works.
