Newdick 16th in decathlon, pace too hot for van Dalen

Brent Newdick of New Zealand is in 16th place after the first five events in the decathlon at the London Olympics.

In the first event, he ran the 100m race in 11.10 seconds at Olympic Stadium on Wednesday.

Newdick, 27, from Tauranga went on to jump 7.36m in the long jump and achieved a personal best in the shot put, with a throw of 15.09m to give him 2533 points.

The overall leaders after the first day are Ashton Eaton and Trey Hardee of the United States and Damian Warner of Canada.

The 110m hurdles, the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m race will be held on Thursday.

Women's 1500m

The pace was too hot in the semi-finals for 1500m runner Lucy Van Dalen, who finished 11th, with a time of 4min 06.97s.
