New Zealand judo representative Moira de Villiers has made an early exit at the London Olympics.

De Villiers lost in the first round of the 70kg division on Wednesday.

She was beaten 1-0 on yuko (accumulated penalties) by Kerstin Thiele from Germany after a tough and even contest.

De Villiers, 22, was New Zealand's only judo representative at the Games.

France's Lucie Decosse went on to defeat Thiele to take the Olympic gold.

Colombia's Yuri Alvear and Edith Bosch from the Netherlands were both awarded a bronze.
