She finished fourth in the 29km event at Hampton Court Palace, missing the bronze by less than two seconds on Wednesday.

American Kristin Armstrong won the gold at the London Games in 37min 34.82s.

Germany's Judith Arndt claimed the silver (37min 50.29s), while Russia's Olga Zabelinskaya took the bronze (37min 57.35s).

Villumsen's time was 37min 59.18s and after the race said it was disappointing to learn that she had missed a medal by such a tiny margin. Twenty-four riders took part in the event.

The 27-year-old represented Denmark at the Beijing Games in 2008 and is a three-time world championship medalist. She became a New Zealand citizen in 2009.
