New Zealand swimmer Glenn Snyders has failed to qualify for the men's 100m breaststroke final.
Snyders finished seventh in his semi-final with a time of 1:00.15, failing to replicate his New Zealand record-breaking swim in the heats. Christian Sprenger of Australia won the semi-final with a time of 59.61.
In the other semi-final, Cameron Van Der Burgh of South Africa in 58.83, an Olympic record time.
Snyders' performance in the heats was the standout for New Zealand in the pool on the first day of competition at the London Olympics.
The 25-year-old had chalked up a time of 59.78 seconds to win his heat, shaving 0.16 seconds off his own personal best and qualifying fifth fastest for the semi-final.
None of the other New Zealand swimmers in action on the first day managed to progress in their events.
Matthew Stanley finished fifth in his heat of the 400m freestyle.
Natalie Wiegersma also placed fifth in her heat of the 400m individual medley, swimming almost three seconds under her qualifying time.
The 4x100m freestyle relay team of Amaka Gessler, Natasha Hind, Penelope Marshall and Hayley Palmer finished 7th in their heat. The result put them in 14th place overall.
Lochte wins gold
Ryan Lochte has beaten fellow American Michael Phelps to take the gold medal in the men's 400m individual medley.
Lochte dominated throughout the race, winning in a time of 4:05.18.
Phelps, defending the title he won at the past two Olympics, finished in 4th place.
The 400m individual medley was not Phelps' favourite event, but the BBC reports his failure to win even a bronze was unexpected.
