New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says his party will be back to contest the next election.
Outgoing New Zealand First MPs were clearing their desks at Parliament on Tuesday, after their election defeat on Saturday.
The party received 4.2% of the party vote, but will have no MPs in Parliament this term, as their share of the vote was below the threshold needed to return to Parliament without winning a seat.
Winston Peters, who failed to win the Tauranga seat, said the make-up of the National-led Government means his party's presence is needed more than ever.
He said New Zealand First will remember every promise that has been made, and hold to account those who made them.
