Demographic changes part of win - National MP

12:24 pm on 11 November 2008

One of the new National MPs says demographic changes helped the party win some traditional Labour strongholds.

National took nine electorate seats from Labour in Saturday's election, including Auckland Central and Maungakiekie.

New MP for Auckland Central, Nikki Kaye, said among the reasons she won was a change in the kinds of people living in the area.

She said she has seen many more young families move into the electorate who are concerned with housing affordability.

The boundaries of the Maungakiekie electorate were redrawn after the 2005 election to include the areas of Royal Oak, Onehunga, Panmure and Point England.

National's new MP for Maungakiekie, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, said this helped swing the votes to him.
