The Chief Electoral Office says figures at midday on Saturday showed about 267,000 people cast advance votes, an increase of about 33% on 2005.
That is an increase on the 2005 election, when 197,938 votes were cast before election day.
The polling place expected to have the most voters through its doors is at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington.
The northernmost polling place is Te Hapua School in Te Hapua, and the southernmost is Halfmoon Bay School on Stewart Island.
