Labour leader Helen Clark says she is pleased for Winston Peters that his party has been cleared by the police over its 2007 return of donations.
Mr Peters was censured by Parliament over the Owen Glenn donation, but New Zealand First has now been cleared by the Serious Fraud Office, the Electoral Commission and the police over various donations issues.
Miss Clark says she would now look like "a chump" if she had sacked Mr Peters on the basis of those inquiries.
She says Mr Peters was targeted by a malicious campaign by ACT and National.
Miss Clark says it is up to voters to decide if Mr Peters and New Zealand First make it back to Parliament.
