Group campaigns for park on red zone land

A Christchurch group campaigning to create a river park out of earthquake-damaged land says it has collected thousands of signatures on a petition in support of the plan.

Much of the abandoned land which has now been red-zoned borders the Avon River; and the Avon-Otakaro Network wants it turned into a reserve.

The group says the deadline for the petition was Sunday and the signatures will now be tallied but the timeframe may also be extended as support for the park grows. It plans to present the petition to Parliament.

Meanwhile, the group is trying to get the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority to include the park in its recovery strategy.
