Media in Christchurch on Thursday are getting a preview of red zone bus tours which start in the central city from this weekend.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has set up bus tours of the central city, giving the public its first view of the area since the earthquake on 22 February.

Hundreds of buildings in the central city were damaged in the quake, and many have been demolished or are due for demolition. The area is still cordoned-off.

Demand for the tours is so high that phone booking lines were overloaded on the first day.

Over 3000 people have so far booked seats on the bus tours, which will run each weekend for six weeks. Some weekday twilight tours also planned.

On Thursday, the media will be taken through the planned bus route and the safety briefing for those on the tours.
