Canterbury University expects enrolments to drop by 10% next year because of the earthquakes, and is appealing to the Government not to reduce its funding.
The university expects to lose 1100 domestic and 450 overseas students next year from its current role of 15,500, as a result of the earthquakes.
Vice-Chancellor Rod Carr says the university needs certainty, and has asked the Tertiary Education Commission on behalf of the Government to continue its current level of funding.
Dr Carr says he hopes to be able to avoid earthquake-related job losses, on the basis that the setback in student numbers will be transitional rather than a permanent reduction.
He says the university may also need financial assistance to meet the cost of building-strengthening work.
