Central station safe, police say

The police say Christchurch Central Station has been assessed and is safe for officers to work from.

Canterbury District Commander Dave Cliff says the building, on the corner of Hereford Street and Cambridge Terrace, has been structurally checked and is safe, but he sympathises with officers' feelings of anxiety.

He says staff who were in the building at the time of Monday's significant aftershocks have described it as a frightening experience, and police are encouraged to take leave when they need it.

Superintendent Cliff says there has been no increase in people leaving following the quakes and camaraderie among staff is particularly high at this time.
