Sumner residents who live beneath a cliff face another night away from their homes after huge boulders fell on their street during earthquakes on Monday.

Many others remain without power or water following the 5.6 and 6.3-magnitude tremors.

There has been substantial rock falls from cliffs at the entry to Sumner and part of a Clifton Hill house has crashed down on rubble.

A large boulder fell onto Heberden Avenue at the base of Scarborough Hill, forcing residents to evacuate on Monday night.

Some people are facing an extended stay with friends or family with the few clothes they managed to grab from their homes.

Christchurch mayor Bob Parker said on Tuesday power should be restored to most homes within the next day, but acknowledged that water could take longer and, in particular, restoring pressure to hill properties.
