Victoria University seismologist John Townend says the latest big aftershocks in Christchurch are consistent with the pattern since original jolt in September.
Government scientists warned two weeks ago there was almost a one in four chance of a magnitude 6.0 to 7.0 to earthquake occurring in Canterbury within a year.
Mr Townend told Morning Report that scientists working on aftershock forecasts, will be reassessing their models and including the new information.
He said that when there is a large movement like the magnitude 6.0 tremor it will generate its own burst of small quakes which will continue for days and weeks to come.
