Elective surgery cancelled

Elective surgery cases scheduled to take place on Tuesday at Christchurch hospitals have been cancelled due to fresh earthquakes.

However, elective caesarians will be carried out, along with some outpatient checks.

The quakes have caused superficial damage to Christchurch Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital, but some lifts are not operating at Princess Margaret.

However, the District Health Board's Burwood and Hilmorton sites are without running water on Monday night and are operating on back-up power.

A spokesperson says bottled water is available at both sites and extra supplies are being taken to them.

After the quakes over the past six months, the health system in Christchurch is well used to managing such disruptions, she says.
