Scholarship for families of quake victims created

The team behind the Student Volunteer Army is establishing a scholarship for children who lost family members in the Christchurch earthquake.

The co-leader of the Student Volunteer Army Foundation says the scholarship was created out of a desire to directly help those most affected by the 6.3-magnitude quake on 22 February.

Jason Pemberton says the foundation has already received at least $30,000 in donations and has been speaking to the families of people killed in the quake.

He says the first scholarships will not be awarded until 2015 and will go towards any form of higher level education including studies at polytechnics, universities and courses such as Outward Bound.
