Deadline set for demolition of Cashel Mall buildings

8:39 am on 11 May 2011

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority hopes to have all dangerous damaged buildings in Cashel Mall pulled down or made safe by mid-July.

Twenty three blocks in central Christchurch remain off limits due to hundreds of damaged buildings.

CERA says the damaged buildings will be cleared street by street and it expects demolitions to start within a month.

Deconstruction manager Warwick Isaacs says the first target is Cashel Mall.

Cashel Mall will reopen in November to coincide with Cup and Show Week, and Canterbury Anniversary Day.

Mr Issacs says building owners will need to carry out the work in line with CERA's schedule, or it will carry out the work and then bill them.
