Liquor ban in Riccarton to be considered

Christchurch City Council is to this week consider a temporary liquor ban in the Riccarton area, which is now the main nightlife district in Christchurch since the central city was closed by the February earthquake.

Police want the ban due to a big increase in the number of people drinking in the streets and disorder offences in Riccarton.

Police say they are now spending more than half of their time in the Riccarton area dealing with alcohol related issues from Thursday to Saturday - compared to only a quarter of their time before the earthquake.

The ban would make it an offence for people to drink in public places in the specified area.

It would cover the length of Riccarton Road and from Hagley Park to Canterbury University and would be in force 24 hours per day until November.

The council will consider the proposal on Thursday.

The idea has the backing of a local community leader.

Riccarton Wigram Community Board chair Mike Mora says he has been inundated with calls from fed-up locals complaining about the mess, thefts and intimidation.
