The Unite union says any perception the city is getting back on its feet again is far from reality.

The union has about 1000 members in Christchurch. They predominantly live in the eastern suburbs.

Organiser Matt Jones told a public meeting and fundraiser in Wellington in Wellington on Friday night that there is too much focus on fixing the central business district, while people in the poorer areas are still being overlooked.

Mr Jones said winter is closing in and many people living in badly damaged homes are still waiting for assistance.

Women's Refuge told the meeting that domestic violence calls in the eastern suburbs have increased significantly.
