Night shelter reopens as homeless trickle back

The Christchurch City Mission has reopened its night shelter as the homeless slowly start returning to the central city.

City Missioner Michael Gorman says hundreds of people for whom the central-city's parks and doorways used to be home were pushed out after the 22 February earthquake.

He says many also faced reduced support from the Salvation Army and the City Mission.

Mr Gorman says, however, that the night-shelter residents were possibly better equipped for the situation than many others, as they know how to survive without certain comforts of home.

He says all City Mission services are now up and running.
